Laboratory Phlebotomist/Assistant - Laboratory
Position Summary
The Laboratory Phlebotomist/Assistant supports the laboratory staff by performing routine specimen collection, processing, preparation, clerical, and support duties. The position helps ensure that specimens are handled accurately and safely and that laboratory operations run efficiently.
Job Description
• Collect, receive, identify, label, and process patient specimens according to laboratory procedures.
• Perform phlebotomy and other specimen collection procedures as trained and authorized (e.g. swab testing and therapeutic phlebotomy)
• Prepare specimens for testing, including centrifuging, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging specimens for send-out testing.
• Follow infection control, safety, OSHA, and laboratory policies and procedures.
• Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous and sharps materials.
• Answer telephone calls and assist patients, nurses, providers, and other hospital personnel with routine laboratory inquiries.
• Verify specimen requirements and identify unacceptable or improperly collected specimens.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
• Perform waived laboratory testing according to established procedures and demonstrate required competency and training.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous laboratory, healthcare, phlebotomy, or specimen-processing experience preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification or training preferred.
• Basic computer skills and ability to accurately enter patient information.
• Good communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a laboratory team.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established laboratory procedures.
